The “Taylor Mead” photobooth project was Boyd’s first major undertaking of a photobooth documentation of a subject. Mead was the first underground film star, a poet, and part of the Warhol Silver Factory. The concept was originally to take 1000 strips in the photobooth of Mead costumed as Superman, in reference to Andy Warhol’s Myth series. Boyd wanted to capture the juxtaposition of an aging superhero. Closer to the execution of the project, Boyd expanded the project to document Mead referencing many pop culture characters, with a focus on Warhol’s subjects and films. Boyd flew Mead to New Orleans in October 1995 and used the photobooth machine at Le Bon Temps Roule Bar. Around 450 photobooth strips were taken.
