“London Underground” is a photobooth project which began in June 1993, during Boyd’s first trip to London. Originally conceived as a portrait project of punks and police in London, the project later evolved to include all walks of London life, with a special focus on the emerging British artists of the YBA. The majority of the project was photographed in the summer of 1996 in London tube stations, which gave the project its title. Around sixty portraits were shot, including of artists Derek Boshier, Sir Peter Blake, Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing, and Georgina Starr, as well as Lady Martha Sitwell while she was living on the streets. The project concluded in 1997 on a trip to London with Billy Name for his Institute of Contemporary Arts exhibition, with the artist Franko B, being one of the last portraits.
