“Fifty States” was the third major Polaroid project conceived by Boyd. Inspired by his time photographing first responders for “Louisiana Cereal”, Boyd imagined a conceptual project that would represent each of the fifty states with just a portrait and no accompanying statement or context for where it was taken. Boyd thought the best way to achieve this was with a portrait of a state trooper from each state, so Boyd spent three years driving across the country from New Orleans to complete the project. Inspiration for the project also came from Andy Warhol’s 1985 book America and his friend Andres Serrano’s 2001-2004 series of the same name.
